Newtown Flicks Film Festival - 30 Mar- 1 Apr

"Across two and half days, the 2007 Newtown Flicks Short Film Festival will be screening new submissions with the only criteria being the films need to be shorter than twenty minutes. And if we can't fit it in during the weekend, it'll be part of Matinee on Bray, our monthly screenings of short films.

The 2007 Festival will also see the launch of Treehouse Flicks, a program of short films specifically for kids of all ages. Treehouse Flicks aims to promote Australian content and identity by showcasing local film makers to new audiences and the industry alike..."

"Tracing 40 years of practice, this exhibition allows visitors to walk through the history of video art from its first appearance in the 1960s to the current day. Curated by the Pompidou’s Curator of New Media, Christine Van Assche, this will be the first time a collection this size has been seen in Australia, taking up two floors of the MCA galleries. Up close and personal with polar bears

Article in SMH about seeing polar bears up close on a buggy in Churchill, northern Manitoba, Canada.

"Churchill is a little town on the south-eastern shore of the Hudson Bay...

The bears like the Churchill area because this is exactly where the Hudson Bay freezes over first in the northern autumn and is the last to thaw in the springtime melt.

This means it offers the earliest opportunity for the bears to get out onto the ice to hunt for food in October-November. And, by remaining frozen until late spring, it is the last drop-off point for the bears coming back to land by mid-July ahead of their walking hibernation during the northern summer when they virtually fast..."
