Anne Wendlandt of Enna

Anne Wendlandt of Enna-online is a designer, craftster and shop owner. Her illustration work and the products she makes is beautiful, colourful, and cute. Her physical store is in Hannover, Germany.

Decor8 interviewed her recently: "She has an etsy store, a DaWanda shop, and a store on her website. In addition to all of this, she creates many things by hand, she's a talented illustrator, and a graphic designer along with a shop owner, so Anne is a busy lady.

What does Anne design? I guess a better question is, what doesn't this girl do? :) She does so much. She crafts earrings out of polymer clay that she then hand paints, she designs postcards, pillows, shirts, hoodies, and onesies for baby, plates, iron-on patches, wrapping paper, softies, marketing materials for her business, her website, the signage on the window of her shop, the list goes on and on. She is inspired by so much, she certainly doesn't want to limit herself to just one thing. .."

More Ikea stores in Sydney maybe

In an SMH article, it says that KAustralia's Ikea boss, Kent Nordin "wants Sydney eventually to have four Ikea stores, all bigger than the 25,500 square metres at Rhodes.

The next store will be built in the city's south-east, possibly on the old Tempe tip, on the Princes Highway. The company is also considering areas around St Leonards, in the city's north, and Liverpool, in the south-west..."

Florence Broadhurst doco on SBS tonight - Nov 18

SBS are screening 'Unfolding Florence: The Many Lives of Florence Broadhurst' tonight at 9.00-10.30pm.

"In this spirited and highly original documentary, acclaimed director Gillian Armstrong reveals the many lives of one larger-than-life woman - flamboyant design pioneer, Florence Broadhurst.

Born in outback Australia in 1899, she was a singer and dancer in Shanghai in the '20s and ran her own fashion boutique in London in the '30s before sweeping into Sydney society as a painter and charity queen. But it was in her last incarnation that she really made her mark, shaking up conservative Australia with her bold, exotic wallpaper designs. Now, with her prints in huge demand internationally, the times have finally caught up with this glamorous, complicated, unconventional woman, whose brutal murder in 1977 has never been solved." Year: 2006.

Generation C - Feb 1 to Mar 8, 2008

Generation C

"Complex, contrary, creative: this exhibition showcases work by young photomedia artists from mainland China who reflect the ambivalence of their times. Born in the seventies they are the first 'me' generation - consumerist, connected and self-aware. They are vain yet vulnerable; wired yet lonely. They ride the rollercoaster of 'progress' while wistfully dreaming of the past. Abandoning any notion of the photograph as a document of the real each work is a performance, a visual fable that finds its truth in imaginative resonance rather than hard evidence.

Playful yet earnest, while some artists wield satire like a sword others evoke a quiet melancholy for lost tradition. Others still, weighed down by the burden of duty to family, ancestors, community, state and the competitiveness born of consumerism, simply imagine what it would be like to fade into another world or fly away like a butterfly emerging from a chrysalis."

Watch live band performances online

The SMH has an article titled 'Mobile mosh pit' that talks about a new Australian website that lets you legally download shows by top musicians.

"As of last week, those who attended Paul Kelly's Stolen Apples show at the Sydney State Theatre can legitimately download the full performance - live banter, crowd noise and all - from http://www.liveband.com.au for $15..."
The idea is to generate additional excitement and sales for bands, while providing instant satisfaction to fans used to the immediacy of the internet without infringing digital rights.."

The idea "came to Jamie McDonald, a partner in the company, as he walked out of a concert in Melbourne two years ago wishing he could recreate the event's mood and make the show last longer.

"I came out and I thought, 'This is fantastic.' I bought all the band's CDs but it wasn't what I wanted. It wasn't the same atmosphere," he recalls.."

Translucent World exhibition - Aug 29 - Nov 11

Translucent World

"Translucent World is an exhibition of Chinese jade from the outstanding collection of the Palace Museum in Beijing, featuring the manifold uses of jade depicting nature as a reflection of human beliefs and emotions.

Since ancient times, the Chinese have revered this ‘heavenly stone’, carved to produce the most prized ornaments and ceremonial implements. Nature, worked in a diversity of themes and styles over the millennia, has remained a potent source of inspiration for artisans. Since China's Neolithic period, real and imagined creatures of the earth - turtles, birds, dragons or other monsters - were endowed with special attributes, as revealed by their depiction in jade. Gradually the flora and fauna of nature became jade’s most important subject matter. After the Tang dynasty, the landscape with its mountains and streams came to occupy a distinguished place within jade’s thematic repertoire. Designed to decorate cultural implements or sculpted into evocative boulders, these works embodied the universal longing of cultivated individuals to escape their quotidian world to commune with nature. As a crucial component of the nature and its rhythms, humans are represented as part of this translucent world.

Chinese depictions of nature through jade are seldom mere representations of the external world. Rather, they explore nature as a reflection of the human ideal. These ideas about nature, as well as their manifestation in jade, are consistent with Confucianism, Daoism and Buddhism, all of which stress humanity’s oneness with nature..."

Once - movie

Once movie

"Once is the inspirational tale of two kindred spirits who find each other on the bustling streets of Dublin. One is a street musician who lacks the confidence to perform his own songs. The other is a young mother trying to find her way in a strange new town. As their lives intertwine, they discover each other's talents and push one another to realize what each had only dreamt about before. Once is their inspiring story. Written and directed by John Carney (On the Edge, Bachelors Walk), Once is a nod to the classic musicals of the past, while it is also grounded in the bohemian world of struggling young Dubliners that he knew from his days as a young musician." Director:John Carney, Cast:Glen Hansard, Marketa Irglova

The movie opens in Sydney August 30 at the Dendy. Looks like a movie worth watching!

Saturday InDesign

Saturday InDesign Sydney was on Friday 27th and Saturday 28th July. There are a number of design showrooms that open their doors mainly for the design profession (architects, interior designers, specifiers etc) to visit. Many showrooms offered cloth bags with brochures of their products inside, food and drinks, and even live music. They had buses carting people around to the various showrooms as well. The areas covered included: Pyrmont, Surry Hills, Chippendale, Waterloo, and Alexandria. I enjoyed the new PYD building. It houses a number of showrooms including Roger Sellers bathroomware and Koda Lighting. Showrooms visited over the two days included: James Richardson, FY2K, Steelcase, Hafele, and Porters Paints.

Monday to Friday tshirts

I like the idea of these tshirts, especially the Friday one.

"Beep, beep, BEEP, BEEP, [hit snooze] Beep, BEEP, SHIT! Yep, you're late again, and you don't even have time to decide which pair of underwear is cleanest, let alone what you actually want to wear.

Monday to Friday tees are the answer to what to throw on in the mornings, the lazy man's (and woman's) uniform. Super-comfy, instant fashion, every working day of the week.

Just say 'no' to crippling clothing indecision, get yourself some of
these puppies, lay back and hit your snooze button. Twice."

Furoshiki: Reviving a Dyeing Art - till 1 June

Furoshiki

"In his latest exhibition, artist and Tsutsugaki Yuzen master Shumei Kobayashi combines the classical Japanese hand dyeing technique Tsutsugaki Yuzen, with the delicate furoshiki wrapping cloth..

Living and working in Kanazawa, the birthplace of Tsutsugaki Yuzen, Shumei is among one of the few Tsutsugaki Yuzen practitioners left in Japan and continues to work hard at sustaining the legacy of this dyeing craft. Tsutsugaki Yuzen is a classical hand dyeing technique, which evolved approximately 400-years ago, and is characterised by its complicated process. Similar to batik, the artist will make an outline of the design onto fabric using a resist paste. The resist paste - a steamed mixture of glutinous rice powder, rice bran, lime, water and salt - is applied to the fabric using a finely pointed funnel-like utensil. After the outline is drawn onto the fabric, the artist will use a selection of natural pigments to add colour and bring the image to life.

Furoshiki will showcase thirty of Shumei’s new furoshiki designs as well as a number of his larger trademark noren (door hanging) works. On the 18th and 23rd of May Shumei will hold two workshops where participants can learn about the many ways to fold and use the furoshiki. Shumei will also be demonstrating the Tsutsugaki Yuzen technique on the 15th and 26th of May."

Atelier Bow-Wow: Tokyo Anatomy

Archinect features an interview with Yoshiharu Tsukamoto of Atelier Bow-wow.

"Yoshiharu Tsukamoto, along with his partner Momoyo Kaijima, is one half of the Tokyo-based Atelier Bow-wow. Founded in 1992, Atelier Bow-wow is one the most unique practices of its generation... Bow-Wow embraces a kind of accidental urban vernacular, using their research/work to chronicle the complex - and often unforgiving - logic of the city. Acting as urban detectives, Bow-wow has catalogued the agility of Tokyo's fabric to produce radical programmatic collisions (Made in Tokyo) and nuanced micro architectures (Pet Architecture).

These observations have figured heavily in their own work, as documented in recent publications Post-Bubble City and Graphic Anatomy. Armed with the understanding of architecture's maneuverability in Tokyo, Bow-wow posits a practice engaged in what they call "lively space." This is a kind of space that is willingly infected with the accidents of site and program rather than trying to control or sterilize them.

Yoshiharu Tsukamoto recently completed teaching a studio at Harvard GSD and runs a lab at Tokyo Institute of Technology.

I caught up with Tsukamoto in Toronto at the TD Centre and later in Tokyo at Bow-Wow HQ to talk pets, public space, stairs, zoning, metabolists, and manga kissa. - Mason White

Part two of this conversation is available in Mark Magazine #8."

Bear on the street

Blue Bear

Saw this very cute blue bear resting on top of a bin on the street. What was his name? Why did he get placed outside? Did the giver and receiver of this bear break up and he was too painful a memory?

He spent two chilly nights out on the street. Late this afternoon, someone claimed him. Hope he went to a nice warm home.

Breaking Down the Visual Effects of Frank Miller's 300 - 6 June

"Join Popcorn Taxi for a look behind the creation of the stunning visual effects on Frank Miller's "300", and how Animal Logic brought the film's stylized world to life.

Animal Logic's Senior Compositor Lindsay Adams will break down the process of how the Sydney based team created millions of Persians battling 300 of Sparta's finest soldiers in fully CG environments.

The talk will feature a look inside the film with a detailed breakdown of the process behind some of the heaviest digital compositing work done on the show, including the Crazy Horse sequence where a 3 head camera system was used to capture multiple lens lengths of the same action that were seamlessly composited together to achieve one massively long piece of killer action.

Lindsay will follow the visual effects process from start to finish, demystifying the tools and techniques that are used to create the amazing images you see on the big screen. The presentation will include a selection of clips and previously unseen material.

Lindsay Adams specialises in visual effects and digital compositing for feature films and has worked on films such as House of Flying Daggers, Stealth, Lord of the Rings: Return of the King, Oliver Stone's World Trade Center, Happy Feet and 300.

Bholu products

Bholu

Bholu is the work of Australian designer Jodie Fried. The products are bright and funky looking.

"Bholu products are designed in Australia and brought to life by traditional Gujarati women artisans from the remote desert communities of The Rann of Katchchh, Western Gujarat, India. Each piece is hand embroidered using traditional techniques, giving each product its own unique and original personality.

The philosophy behind Bholu is about creating products that we love and live with, while benefiting people we work with along the way. By using their traditional skills, the women artisans gain an income, hence independence and opportunity.

Bholu designs are simple, textural and bold and are designed for contemporary interiors and modern day living. Bholu products include cushions, throws, slippers and journals all made from wool felt with silk hand embroidery stitching. Further we are introducing a new kids range called "Bholu Bubalahs" featuring individual drawings from underprivileged children in India."

Tezuka: the marvel of manga at the AGNSW

Tezuka

"TEZUKA Osamu is acknowledged as an artistic master, and is revered as the figurehead of the manga and anime industries in Japan. In the West he is best known for Astro Boy and Kimba the White Lion which were serialised internationally for television in the 1960s.

Manga is the Japanese word for comics and print cartoons. Manga is respected both as an art form and as a form of popular literature. Manga has a huge global following and has had a major influence on international comics and animation.

Tezuka Osamu (1928-1989) drew over 150,000 pages of manga and created over 700 manga titles during his lifetime. His work is acclaimed for its complexity and originality and his drawings showcase an extraordinary calligraphic dynamism.

Tezuka: the Marvel of Manga is a tribute to the importance and depth of Tezuka’s creativity. The exhibition features over 200 original works from the late 1940s to the late 1980s including black and white ink drawings as well as colourful designs for covers and posters.

Philip Brophy, curator of the exhibition and Australia’s leading authority on Japanese manga and animation and said “This is the first time Tezuka’s original drawings have been seen outside of Japan. The exhibition presents the unique power and importance of the manga form within Japanese culture”.

Organised by the National Gallery of Victoria in association with Tezuka Productions in Tokyo, the exhibition features work from the two main streams within Tezuka’s prolific output; his manga for children and youth-based audience (including Astro Boy, Jungle Emperor and Princess Knight), and his gekiga (drama pictures) that are more seriously toned, adult orientated narratives (including Crime and Punishment, Buddha and Phoenix)."

Associated programs include:

Studio Ghibli free film series
Wednesdays 2pm & 7.15pm, Sundays 2pm
21 February to 29 April 2007
Broadening and expanding the horizons of the artform of anime (Japanese animation), Studio Ghibli is one of the most significant animation studios in Japan. Established in 1985, it continues in the philosophical tradition of Osamu Tezuka, the visionary creator of Astro Boy, producing magical, award-winning animations by renowned directors such as Hayao Miyazaki, Isao Takahata and others. This film series, screening in conjunction with "Tezuka: The marvel of manga", is a comprehensive showcase of the output of Studio Ghibli and includes such classic titles as The cat returns (2002), Spirited away (2001) and Kiki's delivery service (1989).
