Work/life/work balance by Andrew Maynard
Interesting article by Australian architect Andrew Maynard on the issues and mindset of the architectural profession which makes it very difficult for architects to achieve a work/life balance. Maynard then challenges the profession "to end exploitative and exclusionary work practices." The article was first published in Parlour.
"Epicurus argued that humans needed only three things in life to be happy – friends, freedom and an analyzed life... Does contemporary architectural employment deny us our happiness; our friends, freedom and the opportunity for an analyzed life? Many would argue that being employed in architecture and the pursuit of happiness are irreconcilable. It can reasonably be argued that most architects, and almost all recent graduates, are working in conditions that are unhealthy, unsustainable and exploitative."
This article seems to apply to many professions in both the creative and business fields.

Rage - Celebrating 25 Years
Visited the "Carriageworks and ABC TV present rage – Celebrating 25 years" installation today. It was one of the events as part of Vivid Sydney 2012. Rage was first broadcast on Friday 17 April, 1987. It was cool watching all these retro and contemporary video clips playing on the analogue television sets. There were stands of headphones available so you could also listen to the music video clips as well. Caught the Gotye 'Someone I used to know' clip playing which was pretty cool! We donated our two analogue sets for the exhibition.

Held on Monday 6 October, World Architecture Day, the Festival will feature architectural tours of the city; activities at the World Heritage listed Sydney Opera House; talks, exhibitions and kids activities at Customs House; tours of Cockatoo Island and much more."
The 'Conversation Corner' informal talks event looks really interesting. There's a new speaker every 15 minutes. This event will be held at Customs House, 1st floor, from 10am - 4pm.
These include:
10:15am Sacha Coles, Aspect Studios & NSW AILA Vice-President - Inspirational Landscape Architectural Projects;
11:15am Ken Maher - Central Station precinct project;

3.45pm Frank Stanisic - 2008 Aaron Bolot Award for Multiple Housing and more..
'Magazine Monday' is an architecture magazine and book exchange event that will be held in the forecourt of Customs house. This also sounds like a cool event to check out.
